Spring at the SB Zoo

Bon Voyage, Bob, Jillian, and Family!
Our Asian small-clawed otter family is moving to Washington D.C.! Bob, Jillian, and their 11 pups, sponsored by Peter and Pieter Crawford-van Meeuwen, have delighted guests here at the beautiful Santa Barbara Zoo over the past three years. The otter family will be going to the AZA-accredited Smithsonian National Zoo within the next month. Although we have to say good-bye to them, we will say hello to others, as we have a new male and female Asian small-clawed otter in quarantine who, the Zoo hopes, will also be given the go-ahead to breed in the next few years.
While we and our local community will miss this animal family, we are excited for them to help inspire even more people to appreciate conservation of the natural world. Visit soon and wish them well!

Introducing . . . Emmett!
The countdown has begun! The Zoo's newest train engine Emmett, sponsored by the Duncan Family and Rusty's Pizza Parlors, will soon be chugging his way around the Zoo.
In honor of Emmett's arrival, we have created Emmett's Conductors Club. This is fun way to learn more about the Zoo's trains and help keep them "choo-chooing" for many more years.
As a member of this exclusive club, you'll receive an invitation to a special welcome event with a behind-the-scenes look at Emmett, appearance in the club photo at the train station, a train fact sheet, an official Conductors Club button, and more! For more information, contact Joey Corazza at (805) 962-5339, ext. 110.

Santa Barbara Courthouse Tower Clock Rings for first time!

With the nearing completion of the Bisno Schall Clock Gallery, the Seth Thomas Tower Clock at the Santa Barbara County Courthouse will ring the courthouse bell for the first time ever.

The Clock Team will be testing the new bell system that will be activated every quarter-hour by the Seth Thomas Tower Clock. In the past, the tower bells have been generated by an electronic carillon system that was not connected to the actual clock. So oftentimes when the chimes would play, it would not match the time on clock dial.
All of that has been solved by Bryan Mumford of Mumford MicroSystems, who has been volunteering his time to work on the new electronic system for the Santa Barbara Courthouse Clock. Mumford has obtained the bell sounds from the UCSB Storke Tower carillon system with the help of acoustical engineers at UCSB. Magnetic micro switches have been custom made and installed on the Seth Thomas Tower Clock that when triggered at the appropriate time, will instruct the electronics which bell sound to play and in what sequence.
The conversion of the Santa Barbara Courthouse Clock Room into a gallery of time is nearly completion. The project has been funded entirely by donations from two Santa Barbara families whose interest in timekeeping has motivated their yearlong restoration of the Santa Barbara Courthouse Seth Thomas Tower.
The project is expected to be completed next month. It will be available to the public through tours guided by the Courthouse Docent Council by this summer.

Opera Santa Barbara Presents....3/23 and 3/25

The Marriage of Figaro
by Mozart

Friday March 23 at 7:30 pm
Sunday 3/25 at 2:30 pm

Here come the Count and Countess Almaviva, Figaro and Susanna.
Toss in an amorous teenager, a scheming old maid, a tipsy gardener and a silly young girl,
and you have Mozart’s madcap Marriage of Figaro.
Filled with mistaken identities and plot twists, Mozart deftly maintains a balance
between drama and comedy as the wily Figaro outwits his lecherous
master in one “folle journée” – one crazy day!
With its brilliant, shimmering score and one breathtaking aria after another,
The Marriage of Figaro is Mozart at the height of his genius.

~Sung in Italian with English Supertitles
