Auld Lang Syne

Happy New Year! What Does “Auld Lang Syne” Really Mean? Historians call it “the song that nobody knows.” And yet we’ve all tried to sing it on New Year's Eve. Here's the real "Auld Lang Syne" meaning. There are scores of traditional Christmas songs, but New Year’s really just has one—and we’re willing to bet you don’t even know what it means. (We certainly didn’t!) Belting out “Auld Lang Syne” while watching the ball drop is a cherished New Year’s tradition. Yet most of us join in without knowing the “Auld Lang Syne” meaning, what language it is or even what it has to do with New Year’s. We’ll fill you in so you can use the saying in your New Year’s captions with confidence. “Auld lang syne” is the title and key phrase of a 1788 Scottish poem by Robert “Rabbie” Burns, typically sung on New Year’s Eve around the world. The phrase “auld lang syne,” which literally translates to “old long since,” basically means “days gone by” in the Scots language. Or, as Merriam-Webster explains, the “auld lang syne” meaning is “the good old times.” As Scots immigrated around the world, they took the song with them. Eventually, North American English speakers translated Burns’s dialect into the common lyrics we know today, made famous in part by Guy Lombardo and his band, the Royal Canadians. The group performed the song on New Year’s Eve from 1929 until about 1977. It’s this version that plays every year after the ball drops in Times Square. This year, when you refill your glass with a twinkle of nostalgia in your eye, know that you’re doing exactly what Rabbie Burns would have wanted. FIRST VERSE: Should old acquaintance be forgot, and never brought to mind? Should old acquaintance be forgot, and old lang syne? CHORUS: For auld lang syne, my dear, For auld lang syne, We’ll take a cup of kindness yet, For auld lang syne. SECOND VERSE: And surely you’ll buy your pint cup! And surely I’ll buy mine! And we’ll take a cup o’ kindness yet, For auld lang syne. CHORUS THIRD VERSE: We two have run about the slopes, And picked the daisies fine; But we’ve wandered many a weary foot, Since auld lang syne. CHORUS FOURTH VERSE: We two have paddled in the stream, from morning sun till dine; But seas between us broad have roared since auld lang syne. CHORUS FIFTH VERSE: And there’s a hand, my trusty friend! And give me a hand o’ thine! And we’ll take a right good-will draught, For auld lang syne. CHORUS

Fiesta Santa Barbara begins August 2. Here's info about the Childrens' Parade

By the City of Santa Barbara The City Parks and Recreation Department is currently accepting entry forms to participate in this year’s Children’s Fiesta Parade. The parade, a longtime tradition for local families, will celebrate its 91st year on Saturday, August 5. Each year has brought new families together, alongside families who have proudly participated in the Children’s Fiesta Parade for more than five generations. Parents, families, and friends create and decorate their own floats, carts, and wagons to join this foot-powered parade. No motorized or battery-operated vehicles are used. Children and parents typically dress in colorful Spanish and Mexican costumes, often bringing chickens, goats, ponies, dogs, and other small animals to add to the fun. Parade entries can be as small or as large as desired. Whether it’s one family of three, a group of siblings and cousins, an entire neighborhood, a dance school, or a special club or group - there is room for every child in the parade and there is no cost to participate. All participating children will also receive free ice cream, generously provided by MarBorg Industries. The community is invited to attend the parade on Saturday, August 5, starting at 10 a.m. as it makes its way along Cabrillo Boulevard from Garden Street to Calle Puerto Vallarta. Families and groups wishing to participate must complete an online application by Friday, July 7. The application and more information can be found at SantaBarbaraCA.gov/FiestaParade. Share Save

The International Orchid Show returns to Santa Barbara March 10-12

Orquideas Katia brings Colombian Species to 2023 Santa Barbara International Orchid Show! Conservation of Colombian orchid species is the focus of Orquideas Katia, a nursery located near Medellin, Colombia at an elevation of 2145 meters above sea level. Executive director Gustavo Aguirre shared a few images of the many varied species from Orquideas Katia, including the showy Cattleya trianae (top left), which is the national flower of Colombia. The intermediate to cool growing Kefersteinia graminea (top right) makes an impressive display with medium-sized flowers opening simultaneously. A vanilla-like fragrance is an added bonus of the free-blooming Dichaea tachirensis (bottom left); the distinctive growth provides interest even when not in bloom. Pleurothallis notabilis (bottom right) produces massive inflorescences of small pink blooms in a veritable firework of flowers. We're excited to see which Colombian species Orquideas Katia will bring to the Santa Barbara International Orchid Show this March! Santa Barbara International Film Festival February 8-18

2023 Santa Barbara International Film Festival February 8 – 18, 2023 All Film info and Schedule is on the SBIFF App. A printed program guide will be available February 6th.
For more information and tickets, go to SBIFF.org Opening Night will take place on Wednesday, February 8 with the world premiere of MIRANDA’S VICTIM directed by Michelle Danner and starring Abigail Breslin, Ryan Phillippe, Luke Wilson, Donald Sutherland, Mireille Enos and Andy Garcia. It’s 1963 when eighteen-year-old Patricia “Trish” Weir is kidnapped and brutally raped at knife-point. Committed to putting Ernesto Miranda in prison, Trish’s life is destroyed by America’s legal system as she triggers a law that transforms the nation. SBIFF has become an important showcase for Academy Award frontrunners, many of whom have arrived as nominees and gone on to win the Oscar. This year the festival welcomes Angela Bassett, Cate Blanchett, Jamie Lee Curtis, Brendan Fraser, Colin Farrell, Brendan Gleeson, Austin Butler, Kerry Condon, Danielle Deadwyler, Nina Hoss, Stephanie Hsu, Jeremy Pope, Ke Huy Quan, and Jeremy Strong. The festival also features smart, insightful panels of leaders from every aspect of filmmaking, including many Oscar contenders. Returning will be the annual Producers Panel, Writers Panel, and Women’s Panel and introducing the new International Directors Panel. Educational opportunities abound with the ongoing offerings to local students and aspiring filmmakers nationwide. Mike's Field Trip to the Movies will continue to delight 4,000 local students from low-income schools. This year will feature an in-person Q&A with writer/director Guillermo del Toro following a screening of GUILLERMO DEL TORO’S PINOCCHIO from Netflix. The Film Studies Program will invite 30 undergraduate film students from across the country to the Film Festival where they'll take part in a packed curriculum that turns the festival into an interactive classroom. Participants receive priority access to the films, panels, filmmaker seminars, tributes, as well as intimate Q&As with filmmakers. The 10-10-10 Program is made up of 20 area high school and college screenwriters and filmmakers. This year’s program includes filmmaking workshops, individual mentorship, and access to casting, visual effects, producing and sound mentors. The student screenwriters and directors are paired together and guided through the process of taking a film from script to screen. Additionally there are free filmmaker seminars that will take place on each weekday during the Festival at Tamsen Gallery. SBIFF 2023 will close on Saturday, February 18 with the US Premiere of I LIKE MOVIES directed by Chandler Levack and starring Isaiah Lehtinen, Romina D’Ugo, Krista Bridges, Percy Hynes White. Lawrence, a socially inept, 17-year-old cinephile, gets a job at a video store, where he forms a complicated friendship with his older female manager. The full list of films can be viewed here and more information about the festival can be found at sfiff.org
