Ganna Walska Lotusland

Time to visit Lotusland! Visit the Horticulture Clock and the Topiary Garden.
Ralph Stevens designed the clock in 1955; the face and hands were originally planted entirely in succulents and copper Zodiac signs were made by Gunnar Thielst. The face was eventually covered in colored stone with a single outer band of succulents in 1966. The clock was renovated in 1997/1998 with grant from Towbes Foundation. Sam Demachki of Ironwood Designs recreated the 12 signs of the zodiac. In the 1950s, Madame Walska had large, looming topiary animals surrounding the clock in what was called her horticultural zoo. Over time these forms declined and were removed. New frames mimic the shapes of MGW’s original topiary circus were installed in 2001 and were designed and fabricated by Lori Ann David.
