Chillpoint Band State Street, in the Promenade Market Don't miss the funky, soulful sound of Chillpoint Band. This local group consists of professional musicians Brian J. Fox (basses), Craig Thatcher (drums), Daniel LeMelle (saxophones), and William Fiedtkou (guitar/vocals). Their renditions range from Bob Marley to Stevie Wonder so grab your dancing shoes and come on down!

Christ Presbyterian Church 36 East Victoria Street Come enjoy local artist Bart Tarman’s installation The Healing Power of Sea and Summit, and enjoy live music. Bart was drawn to paint while walking the 500-mile Camino de Santiago from France to Northern Spain. He will be giving short talks throughout the evening about his art and journey.

Gallery 113 1114 State Street, La Arcada Court #8 Members of the Santa Barbara Art Association exhibit their work here. The artist of the month is Emil Morhardt with paintings of Santa Barbara birds. Featured artists include Kathy Leader, Helena Hill, Deidre Stietzel, Sue Slater, and Julianne Martin. Many other SBAA artists exhibit in the group show in various media.

History Happy Hour at Home They Came, They Saw, They Shelled: The 80th Anniversary of the Ellwood Shelling By Neal Graffy Wednesday, February 23 5:00 PM Location: ZOOM Grab a glass and join us for this presentation in your living room by historian Neal Graffy.   On February 23, 1942, just two months and sixteen days after the attack at Pearl Harbor, the I-17, a Japanese submarine, surfaced in the Santa Barbara Channel and shelled the oil facilities at Ellwood. The presentation reveals the rich history of Ellwood, the mission of the I-17, and the legend of an act of revenge by the sub’s commander. In addition, Mr. Graffy will discuss the postwar history and untold history of the Timbers Restaurant.  Neal Graffy has given voice to local history with over 400 presentations. He has authored numerous books and co-authored two novels set in historic Santa Barbara. Register HERE

Huguette Marcelle Clark A Portrait of the Artist Many have been captivated by the stories of heiress Huguette Clark and her famed summer home in Santa Barbara, Bellosguardo, but few realize she was a talented artist. Trained by renowned portraitist Tadé Styka, she built a deep body of work throughout her long life, which has not been exhibited in nearly 100 years.  In collaboration with Bellosguardo Foundation 

Lockwood de Forest Lighting the Way In honor of Kathleen and Oswald Da Ros, we share a collection of artwork by Lockwood de Forest. Lockwood de Forest was a successful landscapist and also an acclaimed interior designer, known for his furniture with Middle Eastern and Indian influences. A prodigious traveler, he began visiting Santa Barbara in 1902 and eventually settled here living out the rest of his life.  De Forest received formal training in Rome and was heavily influenced by the Hudson River School of painting.

Talk: Women's History Month Women in the 19teens By Betsy J. Green Wednesday, March 30 5:30 PM Location: Museum Courtyard Great changes were on the horizon for women as the second decade of the 1900s opened. The corsets and bustles of decades past gave way to the new freedoms of modern dress. The spread of electricity and of new appliances helped relieve the drudgery of housework while at the same time opportunities in the workplace multiplied. And, towards the end of the decade, women got the vote and even went to war. Betsy J. Green is the author of the “Way Back When” series, which celebrate the yearly social history of Santa Barbara. She authors a Santa Barbara Independent column, entitled “The Great House Detective.”  Register HERE

Santa Barbara International film Festival, March 2-12, 2022

 

Academy Award-winners Javier Bardem and Nicole Kidman will be honored with the prestigious Maltin Modern Master Award at the 37th annual Santa Barbara International Film Festival. They will receive the award on Thursday, March 10th following an in-person conversation about their careers leading up to this year’s performances as Desi Arnaz and Lucille Ball in Aaron Sorkin’s BEING THE RICARDOS from Amazon Studios, for which they have both received individual Lead Actor SAG Award nominations. Bardem and Kidman previously won Oscars for NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN (2007) and THE HOURS (2002), respectively.
 
“Nicole Kidman continues to challenge and reinvent herself year after year. Javier Bardem’s talent is a gift to the world. Only in Hollywood could these actors find themselves playing America’s all time favorite tv couple. It’s cause for celebration.” remarked Leonard Maltin.

Created to honor an individual who has enriched our culture through accomplishments in the motion picture industry, it was re-named the Maltin Modern Master Award in 2015 in honor of long-time SBIFF moderator and renowned film critic Leonard Maltin.  Past recipients include Bill Murray, Brad Pitt, Glenn Close, Denzel Washington, Michael Keaton, Bruce Dern, Ben Affleck, Christopher Plummer, Christopher Nolan, James Cameron, Clint Eastwood, Cate Blanchett, Will Smith, George Clooney and Peter Jackson.
 
The 37th Santa Barbara International Film Festival, presented by UGG®, will take place LIVE on March 2 through March 12, 2022. Official events including screenings, filmmaker Q&As, industry panels, and celebrity tributes, will be held throughout the city, including at the historic Arlington Theatre. Monarch Butterflies Return to Goleta’s Ellwood Mesa

Recent Count Indicates More than 15,000 Butterflies Present

The City of Goleta is pleased to share that monarch butterflies have returned to Goleta! Over 15,000 monarchs are spending the winter at Goleta’s Ellwood Mesa Monarch Butterfly Grove. After completing a long journey from inland California, this group of butterflies is settled into the eucalyptus tree grove until February. The return of the monarchs this year is especially exciting since it is a sign of hope that their population is increasing after many years of concerning, low numbers.

George Thomson, Parks and Open Space Manager for the City of Goleta, said, “Ellwood Mesa is the gateway to the Gaviota Coast and a great place to escape for a quiet walk. We are so fortunate to witness one of nature’s great migrations right here in our own backyard.” 

The best time to visit the Ellwood Mesa Monarch Butterfly Grove is during mid-day, when monarchs are flying around and more visible. If visiting during early-morning hours, or during cooler days, look for clusters of butterflies clinging to the ends of branches. Please don’t throw objects at clusters of butterflies or shake branches to get them to take flight. Please also remember to keep dogs on-leash. 

The Ellwood Mesa Monarch Butterfly Grove is open to visitors. It is free to the public, with parking available on the 7700 block of Hollister Avenue. The Butterfly Grove is a 20-minute walk from the parking lot. Visitors are encouraged to avoid parking in the adjacent residential neighborhood.
